How early should a destination alarm ring? Jeepney, bus, UV Express, and train
The right answer is a distance, not a number of minutes. It depends on how fast the vehicle moves, how often it stops, and how long it takes you to get to the door.
Distance, not time
A destination alarm watches how far you are from your stop. Rush-hour crawl or empty road, it rings at the same distance. So the question is not how many minutes before but how many metres before. Malapit Na starts you with a preset for each kind of ride and lets you change it on the stop screen.
Why each ride gets its own preset
- Jeepney. Stops are a few hundred metres apart and you can get off almost anywhere. A short lead of about 500 m rings roughly one stop early, enough to say para and stand up without waking the whole jeep.
- City bus. Stops are farther apart and the bus is bigger, so you need more warning to work your way to the door.
- UV Express. Drops on request along a fixed route, often at highway speed. More lead than a jeepney so the driver has room to pull over.
- Provincial bus. Highway speeds and luggage. The longest lead, because 500 m at 80 km/h is under half a minute.
- Train. Fixed stations, so the goal is to be standing before the doors open at yours. The preset is tuned to ring on the approach.
The exact number for each preset is shown on the stop screen when you pick the ride, and the alarm rings once you are within that distance of the pin.
When to add more
- You wake slowly, or you are a deep sleeper.
- You have bags, a child, or a window seat on a full bus.
- The road near your stop is fast and straight, where a vehicle covers distance quickly.
- You would rather be awake for the last five minutes than miss it.
Adding distance costs you a few minutes of being awake early. Setting it too short costs you the stop. When in doubt, add.
When a shorter lead is fine
Slow traffic, a seat by the door, and a stop you know well. In a crawling jeepney on España, even 500 m can mean several minutes of warning, so there is no need to stretch it.
