Fell asleep on the MRT or LRT? Set a station alarm before you tap in

Smooth ride, cold aircon, a seat after a long day. Manila's trains are built for falling asleep. The trick is to set the alarm before the doors close.

Why trains are so easy to sleep through

No potholes, no conductor, no honking. Once you have a seat on the MRT-3 or LRT the rocking does the rest, and the announcements blur into background noise. Waking up at the end of the line, or three stations past yours, is a rite of passage most commuters would rather skip.

Pick the station as your stop

In Malapit Na, search for your station by name or drop the pin on it, then choose Train as your ride. The train preset is tuned so the alarm rings on the approach, giving you time to get up and reach the doors before they open at your platform.

If you tend to stand near the doors anyway, the default is plenty. If you are wedged in a window seat on a full train, add distance so you can start moving one station early.

GPS on elevated lines

The MRT-3 runs above EDSA, and most of the LRT-1 and LRT-2 run on elevated track, so the phone can see the sky and GPS works well. Short underground sections, such as the LRT-2 stretch around Katipunan, block satellites briefly. The countdown pauses and resumes as soon as the train is back in the open.

For that reason, set the alarm distance so it rings while you are still above ground, before any underground stretch near your station.

Does the alarm work underground?

GPS needs a view of the sky. On short underground stretches the countdown pauses and resumes when the train is back in the open. For a ride that is entirely underground, a GPS alarm is not reliable.

Does it know the train timetable?

No. It does not use schedules or routes. It measures how far you are from the station you pinned and rings when you get close, which is why it works on any line.

Does it work on the PNR or other trains?

Yes. The alarm is based on distance to your pin, so it works on any train, bus, or road as long as the phone can receive GPS.
